Corfu Authenticity: Signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between OBI & Municipality of Corfu, 7th December 2022.

«The AUTHENTIC is eternal» – Authenticity Corfu

A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed earlier today in Corfu, with the goal of raising awareness among the island’s residents and visitors about the protection of Intellectual Property and promoting a mindset of purchasing only authentic products. Corfu becomes the third Authenticity City in Greece, collaborating with the Hellenic Industrial Property Organisation (OBI) to participate in outreach activities, helping to implement specific commitments that will certify the city as an Authentic European City.

The signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation, between the Mayor of Corfu and the Diapontian Islands, Mrs Meropi Hydraiou, and the General Director of OBI, Mr Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, officially marks the beginning of the partnership between the two entities in the ongoing fight against the phenomenon of counterfeiting and the sale of counterfeit products and services.

With the goal of protecting consumers—both locals and visitors—securing jobs, safeguarding cultural heritage, health, and the environment, and boosting local business activity and the broader economy within the EU, the implementation of the cooperation will include:

  • Public promotional campaigns
  • Distribution of printed and digital informational materials
  • Broadcasts on local radio/television stations and websites
  • Training of local enforcement authorities (police, municipal police, customs, coast guard)
  • Awareness initiatives in primary and secondary education on the island
  • Communication events at popular outdoor locations on the island

Also present at the signing ceremony were Corfu’s Deputy Mayor, Mrs Panagiota Tzanne, the President of the Corfu Chamber of Commerce, Mr Yiannis Alegris, the Director of the Inter-Service Market Control Unit (DIMEA) of the Ministry of Development and Investments, Mr Spyridon Peristeris, and the Head of OBI’s Communications Department, Mrs Rania Zacharopoulou.
