“Adoption of an International Treaty on Industrial Design Law, Riyadh, November 22, 2024”

On November 22, 2024, the Diplomatic Conference for the adoption of an international treaty on design law concluded successfully in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, under the auspices of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

After 19 years of discussions and negotiations, the Diplomatic Conference adopted the Riyadh Treaty on Design Law (https://www.wipo.int/edocs/mdocs/sct/en/dlt_dc/dlt_dc_22.pdf) and its rules (https://www.wipo.int/edocs/mdocs/sct/en/dlt_dc/dlt_dc_23.pdf).

The Treaty simplifies the process of filing industrial design registration applications with national and regional industrial property offices for the benefit of designers and businesses. The Final Act was signed by the head of the Greek delegation, Ambassador of Greece to Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Yemen, Mr. Alexis Konstantopoulos.

For the Treaty to come into force, it needs to be ratified by 15 countries and/or intergovernmental organisations. Countries that ratify the Treaty will need to harmonize their national legislation with its provisions.
