Cancellation of the European Trademark “Turkaegean” – Statements

Greece Defends Its National Interests Decisively and Effectively in the Commercial Field

Following coordinated efforts by the Ministry of Development and the Greek Industrial Property Organisation (OBI), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has decided to cancel the European trademark “Turkaegean” (C58927, 10/01/25).

It is recalled that in 2021, the Turkish Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) filed for the registration of the trademark “Turkaegean” with the EUIPO. In February 2023, during the ministerial tenure of Adonis Georgiadis, the Greek government filed a cancellation request, with the case being handled by OBI, due to the infringement of Greece’s trademark rights. The result of these actions is today’s decision, which affirms Greece’s position.

The Minister of Development, Takis Theodorikakos, stated: “Greece, under the leadership of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, is strong on the international stage and defends its national interests decisively and effectively in the commercial field. We claim our rights with all our strength and through every legal means. This is how we achieved today’s victory with the cancellation of the ‘Turkaegean’ European Trademark.”

The President of OBI, Dimitris Chronis, remarked: “The cancellation decision of ‘Turkaegean’ fully satisfies Greece’s position and justifies, in the strongest terms, our decision to challenge the trademark.”

The Director General of OBI, Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, commented: “In the ‘Turkaegean’ case, OBI, along with the legal representatives who represented the country, worked systematically and methodically to bring about today’s positive result in what was a challenging legal battle.”
