Creatrivia: Teaching Teenagers Intellectual Property (IP) through Play – A Creativity Game at the 88th Thessaloniki International Fair

Teach them young, as the saying goes!

For this reason, the Interservice Market Control Unit (DIMEA) of the Ministry of Development, in collaboration with the Hellenic Industrial Property Organisation (OBI), organised and participated in a creativity game featuring teenagers!

The game, named CREATRIVIA introduced young people to the world of Intellectual Property in a fun and easily understandable way, providing them with the knowledge they need to understand:

  • Inventions
  • Design
  • Trademarks
  • Geographical indications
  • Music, speech, text, and the Arts
  • Counterfeiting, copying, and “fake” products

The teams that participated in the game understood that every creative product must be protected to prevent illegal production, distribution, and trade.

The children were divided into teams and were asked questions covering all forms of Intellectual Property. The questions were specifically designed to stimulate critical thinking and encourage teamwork! At the end, the winning team received a gift voucher, offered to the children by the Commander of DIMEA, Mr. Charalambos Melissinos.

In his introductory speech, Mr. Spyros Peristeris, Head of the Directorate of Data Management, Statistical Processing, and E-Commerce Oversight, provided examples of everyday activities of young people to emphasize how important it is to protect consumers from dangerous and illegal goods or services circulating and being offered in the country.

The children understood what it means to “copy a product or service” and, after the game, had the chance to examine counterfeit products to realize the often-poor quality of materials and the fake logos.

The game took place in the event space of Pavilion 7, which hosted all the entities of the Ministry of Development, as part of the 88th Thessaloniki International Fair.
