Types of Trade marks
Which are the types of trade marks that are eligible to be registered?
Word mark: it consists exclusively of words or letters, number or other standard typographic characters or a combination thereof that can be typed.
Figurative mark: it consists of non-standard characters, stylisation or layout, or a graphic feature or a colour or exclusively of figurative elements.
Combination of a word mark and figuration*: it consists of combination of verbal and figurative elements.
Three – dimensional (3D) mark: it consists of or it extends into a three-dimensional shape, including the including the containers, the packaging and the good itself or its appearance.

Position mark: it consists of the specific way in which the mark is placed or affixed to the good.
Pattern mark: it consists exclusively of a set of elements which are repeated on a defined design.
Single – Colour mark: it consists exclusively of a single colour (without contours).
Colour – Combination mark: it consists exclusively of a combination of colours without contours.
Sound mark: it consists exclusively of a sound or of a combination of sounds. By abolishing the requirement of graphical representation since October 1st, 2017, applications for sound marks are submitted solely by the means of a sound file in which the sound is reproduced or the precise representation of the sound by musical notation. There are not currently examples of sound marks which are reproduced exclusively by the means of a sound file. All relevant examples are referring to marks which are reproduced by a graphical representation.
Motion mark: it consists of, or it extends to a to a movement or a change in the position of the elements of a mark.
Multimedia mark: it consists of, or it extends to a combination of images and sound (as from October 1st, 20217).
Hologram mark: it consists of elements with holographic characteristics (as from October 1st, 20217).
*Note: The trade mark types marked with an asterisk are not separate categories under the EU trade mark Implementing Regulation. However, they are differentiated in e-Filing for practical and technical reasons.
